One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned about lighting came from getting it wrong

A lighting mistake became a lasting lesson about craft, judgment, and what emerging creators still need in the age of AI.

The Lighting Lesson: a side-by-side comparison of the camera-side key mistake and the intended far-side key approach.

One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned about lighting came from getting it wrong.

Years ago, I was producing a documentary with roughly 13 interviews. I had planned a consistent lighting approach, placing the key light on the far side of each subject’s face, away from the camera.

Except for one interview.

The Todd interview frame with the key light on the camera-facing side of his face—the setup Micah identified as the mistake.

About 40 minutes in, I realized I’d placed the key light on the wrong side.

We were nearly finished. Changing the lighting mid-interview would have created another problem, so we kept rolling.

The result? One interview that looked noticeably different from the rest.

I’ve never forgotten that mistake.

And it makes me think about something happening with AI today.

We’re giving emerging creators tools that can produce incredible visual results without requiring them to understand every decision behind those results.

That’s exciting. But it also raises a question.

Are we developing better creators, or just making it easier to produce better-looking content?

The trial and error that shaped my career taught me more than how to operate equipment. It developed instincts, judgment, and an understanding of why things work.

AI can accelerate the creative process. But it shouldn’t replace the process of learning the craft.

Getting the result and understanding how to achieve it are two very different things.
